This is an original poster advertising the sale of the Brig
MILHAM under Captain Tomlinson, to be sold at 3 o clock on Thursday 15th June
1815 at Mrs Grahams in Chapel Street Whitehaven, Cumberland. It also lists an
inventory of the many items that go with it including sails, masts cables,
irons, tools, ropes ect ect. Size 15x17inches.
Is it possible this ship was named after James Milham, or his family?
Descendants of James Milham, "the Merchant"
This is one of those "seafaring Milams" who made several voyages between Whitehaven, Cumberland, England and Virginia in the 1700's. James Milham wrote a book on navigation in American waters. Relative's of his wife, Elizabeth Gale were also a family with significant maritime merchant activities in America, and some of the Gales emigrated to Maryland. An additional family of Whitehaven, the Graysons, were active in maritime trade and seem to have "adventured" with both the Milham and Gale families during the 1700's (see Seafaring Milams data). Some of the Graysons emigrated to Virginia. In 1561, Edmunds Millam of St. Bee's, Cumberland married Margareta Grayson.
The below family tree was pieced together from church records of Cumberland, and should only be used as clues needing further verification. Much more research is needed on these families.
